A facial is skincare procedure which helps treat several skin issues. A facial includes steam, exfoliation, extractions, massage, masque and moisturizer and should not be confused with a chemical peel treatment. A facial is mostly done to maintain proper skin care by nourishing the skin to bring about a hydrated complexion. It is also done to help people to look younger and help keep the skin from aging. This treatment works best when done in a series of procedures.
During facial treatment in a professional salon, an esthetician will first examine and then evaluates the type and condition of your skin. After this, she then cleanses the face, massages and also moisturizes your skin to enable the pores to open. After this, the facialist will unclog the skin pores and if possible, apply a toner. Once this is done, the facialist will then apply a facial mask (usually made depending on your skin type) and then leave it for about 5-15 minutes. She then removes it. Some facialists usually apply another facial mask (a paraffin mask for example) after the first mask so as to further smoothen your skin.
After all these, the skin is cleaned and then sprayed with a freshener after which the esthetician blots the skin very gently and then applies a moisturizer.
The basic facial steps
Consultation – usually, a facial starts with first consulting an esthetician who gives you a form with questions to answer. These questions are basically based on your diet, skin concerns, the amount of water you usually drink on a daily basis, any supplements and drugs you usually take, among other concerns. It is through your answering of these questions that the facialist will be able to recommend what type of treatment you need.
Cleansing-during this step, the esthetician wraps your hair with either a headband or a towel and then starts the facial with very thorough cleansing. He/she then uses cotton pads or esthetician sponges (or even wipes)
The skin analysis- here, the esthetician (after covering your eyes) will then use a magnifying lamp (brightly lit) to look at your skin so that she can determine what type of skin you have (whether it is a dry, sensitive, oily, combination or normal). Moreover, the esthetician checks whether you might be having any skin conditions such as blackheads, aging, acne, dehydration, sun damage, among other conditions. After his/her findings, the esthetician discusses and also recommends the right treatment for your skin.
Steam-most of facials will use a certain machine to direct some warm steam vapor to your face so as to relax it and also soften the blackheads that your skin could be having. Steam will also open your pores.
Facial massage-this is dove using very special strokes with the aim of relaxing you and also stimulating your facial muscles.
How often should one get a facial?
Although this will vary from one person to another, a facial is not like waxing and should ideally be gotten once in a month since that is the period the skin takes to regenerate. It is also advisable for one to get a facial at least for not less than four times in a year. However, for those who are trying to clear some skin conditions such as acne, you may need to do it more frequently.
